Chapter 17

“ARE YOU sure that is safe?” Cameron asked, concern tinting his tone.

I glanced at him over my shoulder, frowning in confusion. I assumed he was joking. “I have rubber soles, so… yeah.” I rolled my eyes and returned to the task at hand, specifically to the magical electric blade I’d “borrowed” from one of the sentries before they’d locked us up. “Honestly, Cam. You’re an ages-old dragon and you claim ignorance about electricity? Come on.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Cameron’s sun-kissed skin redden slightly, and his lips pursed as though he were vexed. I rather liked the idea of him worrying about my safety and well-being.

As titillating as it was to observe Cameron blushing, I focused on steadying the knife handle between the rubber soles of my black sport shoes. Since rubber doesn’t conduct electricity, my shoes were the best available insulation for when I attempted to short-circuit the energy barrier between our fancy cage and the tree trunk.

“Ready?” I asked Cameron, who crouched behind me, ready to yank me away if things went awry. Cameron grunted his acquiescence, but I knew he wasn’t a fan of this plan. Perhaps one reason was the fact that I’d devised it. “You told me yourself that Kamala will undoubtedly attack the Shrine in the morning, completing her incursion by noon when the Tree of Light is at its strongest, and the magic within—”

“Yes, yes, I’m well aware of our necessity for haste.” Cameron sounded grumpy—and human. I kind of liked that aspect of him but wisely chose not to antagonize him further.

I pressed the button on the knife, and a magical energy blast lit up the sharp tip with blue lightning. Hissing sounded crisp in the air, and I felt the hairs on my body stand up.

I angled the knife to the proper position and lowered it to the ring on the floor around the tree trunk. I swallowed hard, closed my eyes, and dropped my feet, praying there was enough juice to short out the barrier. A harsh rattling sound accompanied a bright flash—and the smell of burning.

“It worked.” Cameron sounded awed.

I took his amazement at my talents in stride. I opened my eyes, withdrew my feet, and let the blade clatter to the floor. The metal smoked, scorched. My soles smoked too, but I’d expected them to melt, if only a bit.

The best part, though, was receiving visual confirmation that the energy barrier of our confinement had dissipated.

We were free. Sort of.

I jumped up and hopped in place to ensure my shoes wouldn’t catch fire. Cameron and I then hunkered over the round opening.

The drop was considerable. Though we were about halfway up the tree, the fall had to be several hundred feet from my precarious vantage point alone. In addition, the bark was coarse but hardly enough to give us much needed hand- and footholds. Climbing down seemed a task best accomplished by bugs or winged animals.

I cringed at the sight. “I’ve gotten us this far.
